BRUSSELS.- President Leonel Fernandez today urged the European Union (EU) to prioritize jobs stimulus and growth over austerity measures to surmount Europe’s crisis and steer the world economy toward prosperity.

"In the short term is clearly a need to implement policies aimed at increasing growth and employment, without losing the prospect of going fiscal policies giving way to sober, responsible and sustainable," Fernandez said to the Delegation of the Euro-Latin American Parliament’s Parliamentary Assembly.

Everyone, everywhere, understands the need to maintain a prudent, sober and sustainable fiscal policy," said the chief executive, who is in Brussels today to meet with EU authorities as part of his tour of several European capitals.

He said there’s rising unemployment and a trend toward social unrest and street protests, which reveals that “in fact the message the street is sending us is to also pay attention to policies that stimulate growth and create jobs."

To reconcile these two "antagonistic" positions, Fernandez called for setting priorities to establish measures which tackle unemployment and stimulate growth first, ahead of the austerity policies required to control deficits.

These policies, in his view in apparent “conflict" must "be integrated to respond to a need."

Easier said than done.... ask Obama..

besides the minimum wage here is around USD 200.00 +/- , Perhaps Leonel isn't the best spokesman for the European crisis..

And still no one answers why the metro was build before the cheaper cross country SD to PP or SD to PC first, that would benefit millions not thousands, employ more people and open more opportunities to investment and improve freight and public transport country wide. ??

But has the gall to tell Europe what they should do???

"subjected the Dominican Children to EDUCATION AUSTERITY"

good way to put it...

LF sure has a lot of balls to have the audacity to make economic suggestions for European solutions.
I mean, what are his credentials to make such recommendations? Head of state of the half of a tiny Caribbean island, burdened by debt, gross corruption, clientelism, populism and judicial chaos?
Not to mention how dangerous it is just to survive on a daily basis, dealing with power and water shortages, rampant deliquency of criminals, police and military. Usury interest rates, robber banks.
What is this guy smoking?

THe metro is for SD dumbass not DR!, in order for a city to grow it's needed! There are people form all over the country that go to SD and use the metro as well, so it's not just limited to capitalenos.

Some of you idiots in here are doubting my last hopes for humanity. Get a damn brain!

I find the statements from LF quite extraordinary ,,Firstly,
in his last budget here he increased the budget of the Presidents Office by a huge amount and this together with his own lavish expenditure has shown not the slightest indication of austerity or even efficient management .
Secondly , Germany has been the major country to assist the bail outs of Greece, Italy and Spain and even Ireland and they have demanded that the first measure to be taken is the reduction in social benefits such as pensions,,the Germans have demanded that governments reign in their spending and even England has tightened the belt so that pensions cut in several years later and there are increased taxes , for example at the airport .
Along with the austerity measures , of course all governments try to stimulate the economies but the main way a government does that is by government capital spending and already the southern EU countries are deep enough in debt.
Luckily I have not seen any other report

I suppose that , in regard to the metro you could say the same thing about the underground in New York , more than 90% of the country will never use it but it is essential in NY just as the two lines are essential in SD .

But the NY subway is owned, payed for and operated by NY city, not the federal government, so to compare the two is not correct.

This is payed by the government not by the city of SD..... And may not be as controversial as it is if were the city had payed for it.... But all we got from the SD city is the Zooberto?

The reason for that is not legal for the city of Santo Domingo to raise its own revenue ,,that was resolved recently when the hotels on the Malecon brought a case against the council

Stillhere,is correct or have you forgotten that the Metro was build with borrowed money, using the entire nation as collateral? The city of Sto Dgo could not raise its own revenue if they tried to.

Dont get those ignorants dudes like basta= Joseano, robertojose and stillhere tell them something different.
They obviously dont live in a mountain of Villa Mella with 400 thousand more souls. I never heard of them complaining and sendiong letters to NYC major ansking to shut down the metro and Invest that in schools in NYC, 'cuz education there by the way is HORRIBLE..

There was only one narrow street to get there: maximo Gomez..Simply there was no other options..and Leonel prove to be a visionary..

If you give them a fundita of balaguer, they would be happier than the goverment Metro..
They forgot that those 400 k people need to work , commute and study everyday..The key of succcess of our country..

THIS IS AN AMUSING SITUATION . SPAIN, having either not listened to LF or ignoring what he preached, has today anounced further austerity cuts with an increase in the Value added tax of 3 % ..I think that puts LF firmly in his place

Why should the Spaniards listen to a guy that doesn't practice what he preaches? furthermore DR is a 3rd world country to be giving advice to a 1st world country. What does he think he is doing,
mediating beteween Colombia and Venezuela,as a US puppet ? First have your house in order
before talking about things you don't understand but think you do. Spain's problems are too complicated when you have 8,000 autonomous municipalities as compare to DR 32 provinces not autonomous.Centralized taxes to keep those bums in a centralized place and all public offices at the Capitaleno's disposals as if Sto Dgo was one country instead of a City. If the Capital
Sro Dgo grew it was thanks to the revenue collected from the rest of the 32 provinces.

Josean ,,you have a great problemin that you seem to only read the news with DT and DR! ,,if you were better read you would know all about the attempt by the Sd council to tax its residents ,,,they are not permitted by law to do it .
Yes the provinces and the cities are not permitted to tax seperately so all the infrastructure in this country goes through a central government and so it is unlike the USA ..However the traffic situation in SD is so much worse than anyother place in the DR and the city is so much bigger than any other city that anyone should be able to understand that there is a need for good public transport in the capital where as there is not in the other cities

And who do you think allowed the City of STO DGO to grow at a level that they would be choking?

All the industries were concentrated at the Capital since Balaguer's days, to a point where taxes

were needed from all over the country to have ends meet. This did not happened in Trujillo's days

when all the "campesinos" had to farm their land or lose it. No longer when they can rent it to the

Haitians and run to the Capital looking for a better future Even the biggest industry in the country

which was the armament industry which is no longer there because your corrupted gvts sold it ,

not knowing its value ,was placed in San Cristobal not at the Capital, All the gvt offices are there at

the Capital, from a simple land owenership title to all kind of permits. That is why your Capital is

over populated. All the high paying jobs are at the Capital and still you don't get anything done.
