Sano Domingo.- National HIV-AIDS Council president Gustavo Rojas revealed Tuesday that the antiretroviral drug Truvada, which the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved recently, is not in the country as a pill, and is used the drug’s individual components instead.
The antiretroviral Truvada is the first AIDS preventive treatment and is the combination of the drugs emtricitabine and tenofovir.
He noted however that the treatment is intended for people at high risk and the drug isn’t widely used. "The drug is not on its combination as such, but separately, on the treatment spectrum of people here, of those that so require."
Quoted by eldial.com.do, the official reiterated that preventive treatment is intended for high-risk population, citing zero discordant couples, where one has the virus and the other doesn’t.
Also high-risk population, according to Rojas, are the transsexuals and sex workers, and it’s accompanied by other measures such as condom use and education.
