Santo Domingo.- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) supported the start of operations of a packing with its cold chain and a nursery to produce millions of seedlings for its greenhouses.

The project aims to improve exports and income for producers of the Zafarraya Cooperative, located in three provinces.

USAID’s Rural Economic Diversification Project conducted the initiative as part of the "Strengthening of the cold chain packing plant and construction of a seeder for the Zafarraya Cooperative Union Agricultural Cluster," to benefit 150 farmers.

USAID contributed 1.9 million pesos of the overall investment of RD$4.9 million.

Sounds Good, Let just hope Dominicans are smarter enough, NOT to let big Corp. bring in Genetically engineered Seeds.

OK............sounds find and dandy, good and wonderful and I am very happy to see progress in the making.

However 1.9 million is aproximately 38% of the total, so where did the other 3.0 million pesos or the remainder of 62% come from? And if the larger portion of the investment came from somewhere else, why did USAID get most of the credit and PR for this achievement.? Should we not algo give credit and recognition to the other players involved ?

As much as I am grateful for what has transpired, I am sorry but just can't help but be cynical when ever the US gov't and its agencies interfere and meddle in the affairs of other countries. Even if they mean well many times those efforts backfire with outcomes contrary to what was expected or when ever economic aid is given, it is usually with strings attached.

You make a great point, Guillermo, but, regardless where the money came from or who gets the credit, the seedlings are a start......as I mentioned earlier, we should all ask the media to follow up by covering this project once it falls off the front pages. I cannot overstate the importance of growing more trees....to protect from soil erosion and subsequent flooding all the way to slowing climate change. "From little acorns mighty oak trees grow"....an old saying. These are but little acorns, really, but the results can be enormous given good care.

I agree................the more trees we have, the better. It just that I remember when Clinton got involved helping Haiti in some agricultural project and instead of alieviating the cause simply made the problem much worse then when it first started. In the end Clinton realized the mistake and apologized but it was too late, the harm was done and Haiti has been paying the consequences ever since.

" a nursery to produce millions of seedlings for its greenhouses."

What kind of seedling are they taking about? Are these trees, friut or vegetables seedlings etc?
"Rural Economic Diversification Project"... diversification in what... ??

They make have one large central grower of seedling, then have to transport them to the three provinces.. Why not just set up smaller local seedling nurseries within each province?

USAID, a criminal CIA front in many countries

Stillhere makes some good points, but the problem is that it is just easier having one central point of distrubtion. This is not a Wal-Mart level project. It would be nice to know the types of seedlings, but, a tree is a tree....as to the USAID and CIA, if they are CIA they are doing a terrible job of it...and if they are, at least you know who they are, no? Guillermo, the Haitian tree problem began long before Clinton was even born. If you take a moment and look at a satellite view of Haiti, it will remind you of parts of West Virginia where they blow off the tops of mountains looking for coal. I do not know the extent of Bill Clinton's involvement in trying to reforest the Haitian country side, but, to me, it looks like a hopeless project unless you find a tree that will grow 20 feet, about 7 meters, a year. the project will not succeed. Soil erosion and water run-off will only get worse. I don't have the time nor the guts to go there and start planting trees....

We don't know, Stillhere. As usual, DT does not give us enough information, so we have to try and decipher the real message.
I don't think, unfortunately, that this has anything to do with tree seedlings, but an enterprise for growing produce for export.
At least, that's what I get. What do you think?

NOW I AM REALLY CONFUSED................!!!!

Last time I checked, there was a residential housing development going on a few miles from my house. It was an empty piece of raw land, a few square miles wide that investors purchased during the peak of the real estate boom.

However, I noticed that before the first house was built, the municipal govt installed a sewer system and electric power supply. The developer subdivided the land into lots and streets paved. When the real estate market went bust in 2006, except for a few houses, the lots remained empty but all the infrastructure was already set in place. Just a few months ago, 6 years later, I noticed the cranes going back up again, foundations being poured and a few houses have started to go up. This is the correct sequence of how things should be done. You need to build the frame before you put wheels on a car.

And finally, I don't think that chicken is the answer for question 1. Still stuck on that question.

Which came first — the chicken of the egg? I tackled the question experimentally, using a chicken, an egg, and the United States Postal Service (USPS).

I mailed the chicken and the egg, each in its own separate packaging, and kept careful track of when each shipment was sent from a post office and when it will subsequently arrive at its intended destination..

I am still waiting..............
