Santo Domingo.– The confirmation of Hector Valdez Albizu as the Central Bank governor and Temistocles Montas as the Economy minister are clear signs that President Danilo Medina want to maintain the economic policy of his predecessor Leonel Fernandez.

Both officials, along with the new Hacienda minister Simon Lizardo, make up the government's economic team encharged of designing economic strategies.

About 20 years ago, Chile set up a think thank composed of mostly US university doctorates on economics. They iniciated a long-term strategy for prospering the country.
Today, Chile's economy is the envy of Latin America and other emerging nations.
We should do the same. We have the means but not the brains to become incredibly prosperous!

We can increase exports of agricultural products.(meats and meat products, fruits and various vegetables.)
Low-tech manufatured goods (clothing, shoes, furniture, etc.).
Cement, sugar, beer, rum, cigars, etc.

I intent on pursuing my obsession to produce biodiesel in large quantities. Let's see what happens.

What think tank?

It was Milton Friedman

Well not quite Alpha 66:

The "Miracle of Chile" was a term used by free market Nobel Prize winning economist Milton Friedman to describe liberal and free market reorientation of the economy of Chile in the 1980s and the purported benefits of his style of economic liberalism. He said the "Chilean economy did very well, but more important, in the end the central government, the military junta, was replaced by a democratic society. So the really important thing about the Chilean business is that free markets did work their way in bringing about a free society."

Other economists (such as Nobel laureate Amartya Sen) have argued that the experience of Chile in this period rather demonstrate the failure of Friedman-style economic liberalism, claiming that there was little net economic growth from 1975–1982 (during the "pure Monetarist experiment").

After the catastrophic banking crisis of 1982 the state controlled more of the economy than it had under the democratic regime that preceded the military dictator General Pinochet, and sustained economic growth only came after these later reforms, while social indicators remain poor. Pinochet's military dictatorship made the unpopular economic reorientation possible by repressing opposition to it. Rather than a triumph of the free market, the OECD economist Javier Santiso described this reorientation as "combining neo-liberal sutures & interventionist cures".

By the time of sustained growth, the Chilean government had "cooled its “neo-liberal” ideological fever" and "controlled its exposure to world financial markets and maintained its efficient copper company in public hands".

"What think tank?"....This one.

"What Chile did have was intellectual capital, thanks to an exchange program between its Catholic University and the economics department of the University of Chicago, then Friedman's academic home. Even before the 1973 coup, several of Chile's "Chicago Boys" had drafted a set of policy proposals which amounted to an off-the-shelf recipe for economic liberalization: sharp reductions to government spending and the money supply; privatization of state-owned companies; the elimination of obstacles to free enterprise and foreign investment, and so on. As long as macro-economic stability is maintained and greater resources, within bounds, go towards addressing some serious deficits in primary and secondary education, and continuing to push for boarder international economic engagement and competitiveness, Danilo does well to continue on with this team. A Steady pace of economic expansion will yield enormous benefits down the road. If macro-economic stability continues in DR and most of her legacy deficits are reasonably addressed, a stronger more vibrant nation-state will be the end product.

LF's most important contribution or legacy was his macro-economic stability accomplishment. Without such a foundation, little can be achieved long term.

People complain, but in 10-20 years they will thank Leonel, for the policies that are in place now will help the D.R. become a developed country. The problem is that people expect results right away. They are too impatient. Same thing here in the U.S., people blame Obama and say he hasn't done anything. What they fail to see is that his policies won't show in the statistics for at least a decade and they will say "Thank God for Obamacare and higher taxes on the rich"

PS

You can’t compare Lie-onel to Obama;

First, he has only been president for a little less than 4 years, unfortunately for the Dominican people especially the children, Lie-onel 4 and the 8 years.

Second, Obama is not a Supply Sider Neo-liberal believer of Trickle Down economics like Lie-onel.

So your comparison should be with Ronald Regan, who like Lie-onel, believed in STEALING FROM THE POOR AND GIVING TO THE RICH!

So don't try to cover Lie-onel with Obama Care!

I guess you haven't counted the intermediate, 2000-2004, debacle of the Hippo! :)

Danilo has staked his term in office to uplift 80% of K-6th grade students out of illiteracy and providing an 8 hour school day. That's a welcomed advance. Quality of service is indeed important, but, at least, we have a good parameter in which to mark and judge his objective.

As stated before, it might very well take until 2020 before we have a fully funded K-12 full 8 hour day schooling educational system in DR. And the quality will improve as the pipeline generates better educated students into the universities and colleges. This process is not as easy to fix as say a transportation system. It takes 12 years of good schooling with parental backing and support in many cases to educate students. And that's not counting university training, etc.

But the important thing is that it's beginning, and the poor will benefit the most from a fully funded quality initiative in education.

Like the Neo liberals in the United States you Purple Neo liberals don't wanna take any responsibility.

The republicans still blame Bill Clinton for the failures of George Bush, and you guys after being in power for 8 consecutive years and borrowing more money than has ever been borrowed in the history of the republic, still wanna blame you Hippo for the things you failed to do.

Look at the current state of affairs and the newly elected President of DR, Danilo Medina. His program is the one we should invest time in. No one will bring back the opportunity loses of the 2000-2004 term.

2012-2016: 80% of K-6th graders, 8 hours of schooling. Let us demand to see what qualitative guidance underpins this initiative.

2016-2020: Next President to expand to 100% of K-12 graders. But even IF it were to 100% of K-8th graders, that would still be a good advance.

2020-2024: Next President to expand to universal, K-12th graders, full 8 hours of schooling.

So, if we get faster implementation, we might see universal full 8 hours of schooling from K-12 by 2020. if slower implementation happens, then it will take another 4 years, or until 2024 for the universal system to take hold across the land. Either way, this is a great advance for the DR. The fruits will grow strong and yield far better positive outcomes. And yes, QUALITY COUNTS.

How about the lost opportunities during 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 add to that the 1,000,000,000 dollars wasted on the useless Metro. So please spare me the rhetoric that we haven't had enough time or resources. That dog won't hunt anymore!

Reminder: The PRD was the one to bring the IMF to our Quisqueya, or have you already forgotten April 1984 and the hundreds, possibly, thousands killed by the PRD?

Besides, our debt, thus higher in the amount owned, is more manageable under PLD governments due to the increased productivity. Not like with the Mamagronomo Hipolito Mejia, that instead of reducing debt and increasing productivity, like Leonel did during 1996-2000, he managed to increase debt, reduced productivity, defaulted on payments, and get DR into the credit blacklist.

AHI ESTA LA DIFERENCIA...
