Bishops want fairer distribution of Dominican Republic’s wealth

Higuey, Dominican Republic.- Higuey Archdiocese bishop Nicanor Peña on Wednesday asked the Virgin de la Altagracia and president Danilo Medina for a fairer distribution of wealth and less social exclusion.

"God has his eyes on the helpless, as in the past. God wants the liberation of his people," said Peña, who’s also president of the Dominican Bishops Conference.

Santo Domingo Archdiocese Auxiliary bishop Pablo Cedano and other prelates also asked the Virgin to rid the country of its “many inequalities.”

During the mass to mark La Altagracia Day, Cedano said God fills the hungry with good things, but sends the rich away empty handed.

Medina arrived at Higuey’s Basilica at 9:50am, 10 minutes before the start of the mass, accompanied by his wife Candida Montilla and Presidency Administrative minister Jose Ramon Peralta.

He was received by Defense minister Maximo William Muñoz, of Public Works, Gonzalo Castillo; Police Chief Manuel Castro and senior military officials.
