Dominican Republic has 900,000 people over 60, and counting

Santo Domingo.-Dominican Republic has around 900,000 people over 60 and is expected that by2050 one in every five Dominicans will be a senior citizen.

Nearly 700 millionpeople are past 60 worldwide and are expected to be to 2.0 billion at midcentury, or more than 20% of the world population.

The observation wasmade by the UN Population Fund (UNFP) to mark International Day of ElderlyPersons yesterday Thursday.

The United Nationscalled for sustainable cities for all ages, noting that the aging of thepopulation and urbanization are two issues of global concern in the 21stCentury.

"What can we doto make our cities more inclusive? We can start by ensuring that both youngerpeople as well as the older generations are included in the process of urbanplanning and also taking their problems, their needs and their concerns intoaccount," global UNFP Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin said in a statement.
