Miner ends gold-silver extraction at Central Mountains: Hoy

Bonao, Dominican Republic.- The miner Corporación Minera Dominicana (CORMIDOM) on Friday announced it shuttered its plant which recovers gold and silver with cyanide at El Copey, Maimon township, Central Mountainsn, outlet hoy.com.do reports.

The mine’s executives said they’ve complied with the Environment Ministry’s various procedures to halt operations at one of its plants which use cyanide to release gold and silver from their oxides.

CORMIDOM general manager Jose Antonio Ruiz said the environmental impact study stipulates the plant’s closing when the ores’ depletion is confirmed.

He noted however that extraction of copper and zinc at Mina Cerro Maimon continue for years at the same rate, as well as its social responsibility plans with the communities, “which have characterized CORMIDOM during the years it has operated its project.”

“CORMIDOM’s decision marks the start of reforestation at mined banks thus fulfilling its Management and Environmental Remediation Plan in accordance with the chapter on the recovery of mined areas.”
