SANTO DOMINGO .- Dominican Republic medicine reached a milestone a Wednesday when team of surgeons conducted the first heart transplant in the Cedimat medical center, its director Julio A. Castaños Guzman announced Thursday .
The procedure performed on 22 year old patient Estefani Moreno Vargas, mother of two children, used the classic Shumway type technique, and according to doctors who attended her, the recipient is doing well.
The patient was admitted to the center several days ago to await the transplant, conducted by a medical team of 25, including 16 specialists.
The donor’s age was similar to that of the uninsured patient, for whom Cedimat assumed the estimated RD$1.5 million total cost for the 4- hour operation.

Chan Aquino (a Dominican one) was among the 10 best surgeons in the world since 30 yrs ago (!)
Why don't bring that up ?
Josean, Medical Insurance is something that you must pay for, are you so busy riding a Burro when you can easily ride an efficient Metro line (?) Clean with less pollution and little environmental/ecological impact (!)

Good deal! We have to become self sufficient specially in this area.

I wonder how many Haitians will be saved now? meanwhile Josean here is bashing us again. The haitians have always benefited from our achievement. Tourism, land, free birth clinics, and now this... they should be excluded from the living

This is a milestone achievement - kudos to the Dominican medical fraternity. Given the high incidence of road deaths and murders of healthy young Dominicans, there should be an abundant supply of hearts ready for transplant.
However I wonder, how may other lives could have been saved had the RD$1.5 million been spent elsewhere?

The same applies to the recent very high-profile and very expensive Boca Chica Siamese-twins separation operation, paid for by Dominican taxpayers, through the 1st Lady Slush-fund, and the free new house built for the unmarried underage uneducated mother and her daughter, symbolically the 7-billionth on this planet.

Not in the way you’re trying to sophomorically distort!

The 1,5 M could have been spent sending the patient to Miami, Florida, USA. A lot more experience there, and the operation is a lot cheeper. And the patient has more chance to survive. As she will be unable to pay follow up medicine, I give her six months. Those doctors are not going to pay for her, their name and fame has been made. Now they are going into private practice.
First get the national insurance up to par, so the everyone has the same medical rights in this country.

That headline is very misleading. I'm pretty sure that Dr. Chan Aquino performed that procedure a FEW decades ago.
