Dominican Republic: 3 missing, towns cut off, 9,000 evacuees

Santo Domingo.- Three people missing and presumed dead, severe damages and more than 9,000 evacuated is the result of Tropical Storm Isaac’s pummelling of Dominican Republic’s southern coast.

The former mayor of the town of Villa Altagracia, Pedro Peralta, was swept away as he tried to cross the swelled Guananito river.

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) also reports 9,677 evacuated, 724 houses damaged and 75 communities cut off from the storm’s flooding.

The Meteorology Office forecasts continuing downpours from Isaac’s remnants.
