LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic.- President Leonel Fernandez said Dominican Republic for the first time has had a government which has managed to combine democracy’s legitimate expression, freedom and social justice, together with the country’s progress, modernization and welfare.

"I hope that upon completing this third term, most of the Dominican people can in fact see that every effort has been to reconcile democracy, freedom and development progress."

The president, speaking to inaugurate the Coral highway that links several resort regions, said despite that not all agree and acknowledge the government’s work, he’s convinced that the Dominicans "of the light", which he affirms are a big part, do agree with its effort.

"Marti said the sun burns with the same light it shines with. The sun has spots, the grateful see the light and the ungrateful see the stain. I'm sure most of Dominican people are a grateful people who at their time will acknowledge the work of the government."

Fernandez said his great government work has been the result of the work of his team which has accompanied him during the last eight years and that he has provided only guidance for its implementation.

He said to develop fully the country it has to construct infrastructure, for which his Administration has understood the role that plays in a nation’s progress.

Right...what legacy? corruption and ineptitude? Building a few bridges and highways does not make Leonel a good leader, on the other hand, turning a blind eye to corruption, failing to halt crime and the drug trade, allowing the Haitian inmigration issue to get out of hand and last but not least not allocating 4% for education and imrpoving the overall system so that our students have a a chance to achieve good things do however make him a terrible president.

I might add, NARCO’s Paradise (caps).
1. Legacy of embezzlement.
2. Open police corruption.
3. One of the highest number of feminicide in AL
4. Murders/larcenies/robberies…….
5. Lack of a reliable energy/water supplies (basic life support issues). And the list goes on and on…….
PS: I DO NOT HAVE any political affiliation in DR; neither wishes to have one. This is simply my unbiased opinion, because I love this Island. This administration has ruined the country. Anybody who defends the accomplishments of the current administration is simply betraying the core value of our democracy. DR is the best place to live in AL (facts); you can ask any of the EXPATS and they will agree with me. However, they will also tell you that the economic disparity cannot be ignored.

Someone presented a good analogy about the Haitians’ passive and subtle invasion of the RD: It is like a cancer that metastasizes.

The previous administration was the “benign tumor” that all of the sudden turned malignant and Lionel helped to “metastasize”. It was a negative team effort.

Only 20 calls were allow and the results were Leonel got 14 Gold medal approval rating. And less not go too far, if Leonel would had the chance to get reelect it this past election he would it had won again.

I have notthe slightest doubt that noone will ever be able to forget the legacy of LF ,,he has had placed so many plaques around the country saying that he opened this or that , or that he commenced this or that ,,,no one could ever accuse him of modesty But in fact , he has a wonderful record of getting the infrastructure of the country vastly improved and it seems that he has concentrated a vast amout of time on this important issue .
he has failed dreadfully in bringing a decent standard of law and order or justice to the DR and I doubt if people will forget that either ,
My sum up is that he has done his job , so let him get out of the way and let Danilo do his job which will have a different focus

I don't know the intimate details of the Administration and won't choose a side here but from a historical perspective one can say a legacy of horrible things doesn't prevent a leader from doing seemingly contradictory things that are very progressive and important for the progress of a nation. It could be that you are both right. Its easier for me to cite Trujillo who is dead and documented. He's as bad and probably worse than what everyone knows and says about him. But the modern Dominican state and nation would be almost inconceivable without several changes that came out of his era. This is most notable in the area of fiscal and agrarian/land policies that have laid the material (alimentary and fiscal) and administrative (especially standardization of land ownership) foundation for much of the good...and bad that you all are talking about. You're probably all right!

In Honor of Roy's request!

“Leonel is the CHAMPION OF CORRUPTION”

"Government of Leonel has been Champion in Administrative Corruption"

"It has been a Government in which there has been lack of administrative transparency in the management of public funds and also where there has been a WASTE OF THE RESOURCES that have been raised the Dominican State"

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - The former presidential candidate of the party Dominicans for Change, Eduardo Estrella, scored the eight years of President Leonel Fernandez’s admininistarion, as "the champion of administrative corruption in the Dominican Republic".

“Estrella stated that the eight years of the Government of Leonel Fernández, that conclude this 16th of August, have been more shadows than light, and history will consider that it has more negatives than positives.”

"A Government which DID NOT SUPPORT EMPLOYMENT OR EVEN THE NATIONAL PRODUCTION, it has been a Government that has BORROWED SCANDALOUSLY both internally and externally, a Government in which insecurity, crime and femicides have increased in the country" he expressed."

He highlighted the fact that his has been a Government where there has not been real support for Dominican education, "beginning by refusal to fund education at the mandated 4%."

"It has been a Government in which there has been lack of administrative transparency for the management of public funds and also where there has been a waste of the resources that the Dominican State raised" said.

He stressed however that the Fernández Government was good in fundraising, "but it has been bad in the management of public expenditure".

"To be objective we could say that it has glowed, in the macroeconomic management of the economy, exchange rate stability, inflation control and the implementation of the country's international relations."

In addition Estrella said "that it has been a Government that has not had a defined policy to combat the housing deficit in the country, a Government in which there has not been support for small and medium-sized enterprises or the national productive apparatus, it has been a Government in which the countryside (agriculture) has been neglected".

"Ultimately we come to the understanding that the country you will NEVER agree to repeat another administration of the government like Leonel Fernandez’s" expressed the political leader.

Most of the comments above really confirm why this and previous governments don't allocate the funding to education. The government, whichever color, simply does not want an educated population who would see through the rhetoric which keeps people voting them into positions of power. An educated population would never have cast a single vote for the "Hippo" but nearly 50% did.

As a previous comment already said give someone a bag of groceries, a cap and tee-shirt and a case of beer and they will vote for you, with no idea what you stand for or if you have the capacity to fulfill the role. And they will argue the toss with anyone who disagrees without the foggiest idea what they are talking about.

The Deputies amending the wage cap bill is a prime example of how legislators can do whatever they want to ensure their financial position at the expense of the country and get away with it simply because the vast majority of the population don't have the education to see what is goin

Now you finally understand WHY supporting LF was the lesser evil choice. Josean will one day agree, too.

But wait until the market opening mechanisms of DR-CAFTA get going for good in 2015-6! Then things are going to get really hot in DR. And it will only get worse unless the DR transitions rapidly towards more productivity-taking advantages of the infrastructure and higher standards in education. Poverty and Wages

“According to the Economist Miguel Ceará Hatton, as the average Dominican household size is 3.7 members, a household income that is lower than RD$ 16,000 a month is considered poor and if it is lower than RD$ 7,086 is in extreme poverty. He explained that by June of this year, the average income of poverty was RD$ 4,324 per person and the income of extreme poverty, that is, one that only covers food was Rd $1, 915. Like most presidents everywhere, Fernandez is leaving a mixed legacy. One has to look at the two immediate past presidents to see that Fernandez was reasonably successful in avoiding both of their most conspicuous faults.

Balaguer undermined freedom and democracy, first with death squads and then with stolen elections. Mejia destabilized the economy and did little in the way of infrastructure investments.

Compared to both in these key areas, Fernandez has been a major improvement and ought to be given some credit for that.

On the other hand, he did not make any headway in several other important areas, such as reducing corruption, improving education, fixing the electric system, putting the nation on an environmentally sustainable path and reducing the grossly unequal distribution of income and wealth.

But then no Dominican president has accomplished these things. The DR, like all nations, is a work in progress. I hope Medina can make some progress in these task. We'll s

"President Fernandez, please stop the stealing"

I could be arrested for writing this and even worse, I might have to resign from Dominican Today, and my family harassed.

But I’ve reached my limit as a journalist, a Dominican, and as the father of my children, whose future can’t be sequels of this frustration and chaos.

President Fernandez’s Government has stolen my trust in him and his party. His Administration has stolen my dream of a country where you can plan, dream and trust in the government to do the right thing.

President Fernandez’s Government has stolen my trust in his ability to fend off the legions of thieves who, in the guise of collaborators and party affiliates, steal my money and that of the millions of taxpayers.

But I will not let President Fernandez’s Government steal my dignity by continuing to coexist with this pent-up outrage.

Here is another little item for the” I LOVE Lie-onel Fernandez’s s-CRAP Book!”

“Fausto Rosario classifies Government of President Fernandez as a "disappointment"

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.- Journalist Fausto Rosario said Sunday that during the eight years of the Government of the Party of Dominican Liberation (PLD) (2004-2012), under the leadership of Leonel Fernández, the authorities had the opportunity to produce economic and institutional changes.

“Rosario also said, that initially the Dominican society entrusted Leonel Fernandez to good governance, however, from the beginning of 2012, the population lost credibility in the President because "in his speech, he says one thing and in fact does another".

"These eight years have been a disappointment, many missed opportunities for the Dominican society make leaps in competitiveness, the flourishing of the economic, and instead we have had setbacks in the institutional processes", so said the director of Acento.com.do will being interviewed on the program "Leaders", hosted by Orlando Jorge Mera, which airs every Sunday at nine o'clock in the morning on Color Vision.”

He also said that the amendments to the Constitution made in 2010 were made to "grant and concentrate more power around the Executive Branch".

He added that Leonel Fernandez managed the "operation of public resource with little transparency" and criticized the budget received by the Office of the First Lady, which he described as "insignificant."

Danilo - Leonel relationship

With regard to the relationship that Danilo Medina as President and Leonel Fernández as President of the PLD will have, Rosario stated that the latter will remain in a low profile during the first months out of power.

He pointed out that "If Danilo Medina does not accuse Leonel Fernandez for the great economic crisis which he will receive in a short time the public will blame Danilo Medina".

In addition, said you don't expect no surprises from the Government of Danilo Medina, although there is a large part of the population that thinks that necessary changes in society carried out.

"Between Leonel and Danilo has been a Pact in the practice of cohabitation." Danilo knows that Leonel is the candidate of the PLDP in 2016 and knows that he cannot do anything against him. He cannot direct the Public Ministry (Prosecutor) to pursue to any corrupt individual. I wish Danilo Medina luck. "If Danilo is doing well, the country doing well", he said.
