Santo Domingo.- Three prominent economists yesterday suggested granting extraordinary powers to president elect Danilo Medina, so once in office, can adopt the measures needed to deal with the economy’s problems.
"The economic situation merits extraordinary powers for the president elect to take concrete and courageous decisions and not have to seek consensus which what in many cases does is to hinder," said Frederic Emam-Zade, in the company of Carlos Despradel and Jose Luis de Ramon.
He said though it may be undemocratic, other countries have done so successfully.
Despradel said still to be seen is whether those who supported and financed Medina’s campaign will let him take the economic measures required.
He noted that Medina has said that if you want to go down in history one cannot please everyone.
De Ramon says Medina must be given a specific period of time to adopt economic measures the country needs, noting that though this goes against democracy, "I think it's necessary."
After slamming Congress’ “embarrassing behavior,” de Ramon laments that it’s the entity that decides whether to adopt a tax reform or not. "Congress is acting like a drunk with a machine gun."

Fixing the economy, per se, isn't the problem. I think we have what it takes to become wildly prosperous....The biggest problem, bar none, is the "me first", Dominican politician mentality that hinders the collective welfare of our population.
Everyone is out to "get my own" by using their time in government to enrich themselves, regardless of what's best for the country.
Medina should be given the power, (albeit, briefly), to rule by decree until we're in better position to rule by concensus.

One need only look at the Congressional example to see how difficult-almost imposible-will be any effort to bring about consensus along the three National pacts Medina has mentioned as crucial in moving forward. The labor Pact is strongly objected to by the established power holders, and so forth.
Thus this idea has some merit. Again, look at many of the recent, 40-50 year examples of nations that have brought about significant transformations in their societies: South Korea, Taiwan, Singapor. They have been led by strong, in some cases dictatorships, for long streches of time during their economic miracles. Lie-onel did not miss an opportunity (at the taxpayers’ expense of course) to gallivant around the globe touting the Dominican Economic “miracle” and lecturing the world on PURPLE economic policy, even as late as month ago.
In fact in his "MARATHON RIBBON CUTTINGS TO HUMILIATE Danilo TOUR," he still has been beating his chest about his great democratic and economic consolidation of the Dominican Republic.

But Berkman said those feelings coincide with what she hears in Washington and in other places her work takes her.
