Santo Domingo.– The Annual International Coastal Cleanup is under way today in the Dominican Republic, one of the 127 countries involved in the global initiative.
Each year, thousands of volunteers from around the world participate, clearing tons of trash from coastlines, rivers and lakes, recording every piece of trash collected.
According to Vida Azul chief Oscar Oviedo, the coastal cleanup includes 157 sites, surpassing last year’s 132 localities. In the Dominican Republic, the effort has the backing of the Ministry of Environment and Fundacion Vida Azul.

When I first visited Santo Domingo in the late 90's, one things I noticed was how locals throw trash any & everywhere. They could be 2 steps from a Trash Can, but they would still throw it in the streets are on the ground. If this country could get rid of the Garbage and clean up their Air Polution it would be a more attractive vacation destination to visit. Santo Domingo is a beautiful city. I don't think the locals relize what they got. Though a Jewel in the Ruff, IT JUST NEEDS A LOT OF BUFFING AND IT WILL SHINE

Agree with Buscoon, Dominicans need to be trained in the ways of civilized people. It starts in kindergarten and up, and also put up posters indicating to "put garbage in it's place" or else get a fine or imprisonment or both.!
But one important part of this equation is that there aren't many thrash bins throughout SD, and, even worse, when they're full, thrash isn't picked up!
The govt must assign trucks for that purpose on a daily basis. Don't let it pile up!
Bayman, I've had the same experience. But it doesn't change. Very frustrating.!

If you want to get them to learn, start an education program. Good media presentation would help. Then on top of all of this punish those who litter by forced labor to clean the streets they foul. The public will ge the message. Dream on Zooma, dream on.

My Dad used to told me that during the Trujillo years the DR streets were at least clean.

new to the site, what interests me the most is the passionate dedication that curtain writers "josean, Danny00, etc." seem to have when writing on this blog. they never miss a story, and manage to post their elaborate, rather incoherent opinions. my question is, if they find this nation so deplorable, why not just pick a different country that suits there needs? its no secret that DR has a sack full of problems, everybody knows that. but why? i find it even more commicle when i find out the pessimists are Haitian cause... well... its like pot calling the kettle black, ya know. and if you are a foreigner, and seem so repulsed by this small island nation, why not pick a different nation to b***h and moan about? because at the end of the day, the people who hate you the most are the ones who are tentatively watching your every move, cause they are your biggest fans:) so to all the haters on this site who dedicate themselves to keeping track of dominican affairs, Dominicans love you too.

Those characters want and live for attention, they wants us to get upset and argue with them. That shows you how miserable they are, im starting to think they are part of DT and are doing this on purpose. DT doesn't do anything about it, out of 20 comments 10 are from haitians and foreigners, just like they come to DR wanting to change our laws, they do they same on this forum. But the worst part is when domincans start this back and fourth arguments with them, adding more fuel and not knowing what their purpose is. Sad what has become of this forum.
From: United States
ZonaApache- I also suspect those guys are part of DT and having them around keeps the wheels rolling. If anyone knows best are people from Miami who understand that bad wheather keeps the media ratings high and this is the same technique DT uses to keeps the the forum alive and going. If everything was sugar, spice and everything nice, it would get rather boring and would probably get half the amount of readership.
From: United States, I dont even live inside a house , I haunt one!
Hey this is a start to the right path , it shows dominicans care about there enviroment im proud of them , all we need is more education , and awareness on cleaning and stopping littering .

Another year gone, the same story is back with not one thing done about it... My last drive down past that "beach" (in pic) not one bin in sight... Same amount of garbage to clean up...
So? how many more years will go by before something other than talk and good intentions happens?
There are a lot of very smart people on here, can we not join together on just this one thing we all see as a big problem nation wide and start something?
I'm open to ideas and have a few of my own, So enough talk, I'll start a forum and lets go past the ideas and act upon them...

A few years back I was staying at a resort in Sosua. The place was spotless from Monday-Thursday. Beginning Friday the place became noticeably dirtier and louder. The music being played throughout the resort was at earsplitting levels and the amount of trash (including pampers/diapers) on the beach must have quadrupled. I soon realized that Friday -Sunday the clientele became predominantly Dominican. As the old saying goes......... We have met the enemy and he is us.
From: United States
Pedrin- I know exactly what you mean. I had a similar experience. That is why I do not visit Sosua during major Dominican holidays.

"We have met the enemy and he is us."
Sad, but true.! There are way too many of us, inconsiderate of one's neighbour, with the constant blasting of "music' and the refusal of putting thrash where it belongs.
We have a home in SD which we're trying to sell, exactly for this reason. My next home will be located far from anyone. Perhaps in the small town of Cabrera, in the North-East. Presumably, a better kind of people there, I hope.
