Santo Domingo.- The government decided to continue the fuel subsidy for buses until December 31, Industry and Commerce Minister Jose del Castillo affirmed Monday.

In last week’s meeting of the Cabinet it was decided to implement a series of austerity measures to cut government spending, and tackle the fiscal deficit currently at more than 90 billion pesos.

The halt to the fuel subsidy was among the measures expected, and which the government has been prociding the public transport sectors for several years. The subsidy is also provided to several industries.

As part of his announcement del Castillo said the government's decision to keep the fuel subsidy for buses was adopted to avert higher fares, as bus owners’ unions had warned.

It is best the government start a dialog now with the transit companies. Should the gov't wait until the end of the year the companies will have more leverage to bargain in their favor due to high demand placed upon them by holiday travelers. A threat of a halt in services by the companies and their spin doctors twisting facts at that time will make the government look like the bad guy in the eyes of the public.
