Santiago businesses demand an end to truckers’ grip on ports

Santiago.- Santiago’s retailers and Industrialists grouped in ACIS on Tuesday demanded that the Government put an end to the truckers’ freight monopoly in the ports, claiming it poses a threat to domestic production.

They complained that north region companies lost more than RD$1.0 billion during the five-day strike at Multimodal Caucedo port.

In a news conference, ACIS president Sandy Filpo called on the government to confront the lawlessness and impunity of the groups of truck owners under the guise of unions.

In that regard, he demanded that “in the same way it was done in Puerto Plata,” the union status of the truckers at Caucedo should be canceled. "This begins to affect local industries, which are threatened by two groups of freight companies’ struggle for control."
