Despite ‘corrupt’ label, ex president Fernandez still leads: Poll

Santo Domingo.- Former president Leonel Fernandez would get 31% of the votes in the 2016 presidential election, against 17% for former president Hipolito Mejia; 14% for Luis Abinader; Guillermo Moreno’s 7%; Miguel Vargas 3% and Federico Antun –Quique, 1 percent.

The figures are from a survey for newspaper Diario Libre by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, whose executive Jessica Reiss on Tuesday notes that “Fernandez has been debilitated especially by the accusations of corruption.”

Since Fernandez’s 31% isn’t enough for a first-round win, in a runoff with Mejia, would obtain a 10-point lead, 47 to 37, while 12% said they’d vote for "none."

Corruption is hurting Fernandez,

The poll found that corruption is one of two top concerns, as 35% see it as second only to unemployment.

Nearly half (48 percent) say Fernandez is corrupt, compared with 25 percent for Mejia 7 percent for Vargas, and only 1 percent for current president Danilo Medina.
