US Coast Guard, local Navy nab 38 boatpeople bound for Turks & Caicos

Santo Domingo.- The US Coast Guard and Dominican Republic’s Navy arrested 38 Dominicans trying to reach the Turks & Caicos on a makeshift boat (yola) early Thursday.

Dominion Navy chief of staff Edwin Dominici Rosario, speaking at the 27 de Febrero Naval Base, said with the 38 detainees, the total number of Dominicans and Haitians arrested while trying to reach Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands in just three months now stands at 300.

He said the boat set sail from Manzanillo Bay (northwest), where authorities investigate several suspects of organizing the trip.

Dominici said more details will be provided in the course of Thursday afternoon when the detainees arrive.
