Defense buys helicopters to patrol the border

Santo Domingo.- Defense minister Sigfrido Pared revealed Tuesday that two helicopters with integrated cameras were acquired to bolster surveillance at the Dominican-Haiti border.

He said also purchased were 30 off-road vehicles, motorcycles and trucks for the Dominican Navy to improve surveillance in the area.

The official called Dominican Republic one of the countries whose border faces the most security risks. "We’re determined so those who traffic weapons and drugs don’t use our territory, through the various specialized security agencies."

Pared said Dominican Republic is the only country which has a maritime border with the nation which produces 90 percent of the world’s cocaine (Colombia), a maritime and land border with Haiti and a maritime border with Puerto Rico.
