Country’s ‘owners’ unleash chaos again

Santo Domingo.- Thousands of commuters from Santo Domingo Este were left stranded since 5am Wednesday when drivers of the Castellanos Av. (La 17) route used their buses to block the Sanchez bridge in both directions

Traffic was backed up several kilometers through several barrios by drivers of the route to downtown Independencia park demand compensation claiming that the second subway line, now under construction, will hurt their income.

Commuters couldn’t get to work on time and many were forced crossed the Sánchez bridge on foot as the jam reached San Vicente Av. at Los Mina, where police agents arrived near 8am.

The constant, often violent strikes staged with impunity by the bus owners’ unions has earned them the name “the country’s owners.”
