Miguel Vargas: Decrease in middle class is a challenge to ruling class

Santo Domingo.- Opposition PRD party president Miguel Vargas said that the decrease in middle class and the persistence of high levels of poverty within a significant majority of the population, reveal that the results of Dominican Republic’s public policies are disappointing, which tell of need for a new inspiration and determination for social change.

Vargas said the policies applied by the government have not helped reduce the inequality, and the people’s quality of life has not been a priority in the agendas of the administrations.

He cited the data from the UN Development Program (UNDP) which shows that between 2000 and 2012 the Dominican middle class went down eight steps in its size, and mentioned figures from the World Bank that reveal that for over a decade the economic growth has not mitigated inequality.
