Dominican Republic senator‘buys’ political party(Update)

Santo Domingo.- Former presidential candidate Amable Aristy on Thursday resigned from the once-powerful PRSC party, in a letter to organization president Federico Antun.

The resignation comes after weeks of reports of differences with Antun and other PRSC leaders.

FILE. Veteran politico Amable Aristy has reportedly made "due diligence" to become the president of the minority party La Estructura, headed by the also politico and impresario Andrés Vanderhorst.

Dubbed the ‘Chieftain of Higuey’ Aristy likely paid as yet-unspecified amount including alleged shares in gas stations to obtain the political organization, whose name would be changed to the Authentic Reform Party (PRA).

Local media report that Vanderhorst would likely head PRA’s presidency temporarily, but the governing board will be mostly supporters of Aristy, the senator of Altagracia Province (East).

A source quoted by El Nacional revealed that PRA’s rank-and-file would come from the “old guard” of the conservative party, PRSC, which competed for the Presidency allied with La Estructura several times with the late Joaquin Balaguer, the PRSC’s founder.

Aristy, when asked about the PRA and his departure from the PRSC, said “everything in due time,” while Vanderhorst stays mum on the topic.
