Chief rebuffs Police ‘moral degradation’ but think tank agrees

Santo Domingo.- National Police chief Manuel Castro on Tuesday rebuffed retired police and military generals’ assertion that the police and the armed forces undergo “moral degradation,” and that they are concerned over the social outcry from the country’s rising crime.

"Not at all, in the National Police as in many institutions occur isolated incidents, the big difference with the National Police is that the chief Manuel Castro doesn’t cover-up the crimes of his subordinates," said Police spokesman Jacobo Mateo.

However the think tank Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) agrees with the retired generals’ position, noting that society perceives that moral degradation in law enforcement and public safety agencies.

Finjus vice president Servio Tulio Castaños said the absence of a true police career, the inhuman condition in which they work, with salaries of misery, deprived of social security and other scarcities are to blame. "That’s the reason why many members of the police end up being part of criminal networks."
