Haitians flock toward legal status in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Hundreds Haitians on Monday swarmed the offices where the government conducts itsprogram to legalize illegal aliens, many of whom asked the authorities to openmore facilities to issue ID cards, notingthat they have to get on the lines since early dawn.

Some arrived early topick up their IDs and others to get the documents needed to qualify for the programwhose deadline to register expired June 17.

"It is an abuse,there´s vacation, they can put more offices to deliver the cards because thereare many people who are working and cannot ask permission," said one ofthe foreigners who went to the offices of the Interior and Police Ministry buildingin the capital, with dozens of police agents standing by.
