Protesters clash with Electoral police, 15 arrested

Santo Domingo.- Fifteen people were reportedly arrested ina clash between Electoral police and protesters in around the city SantoDomingo Norte, with gunfire heard and torched tires hurled into the streets.

A witness quoted by diariolibre.com said supporters of incumbentmayor Francisco Fernandez demanded that the election be voided in the town, allegingfraud in the vote count. They said someone fired one shot at the ElectoralPolice agents, who returned fire at around 9:30 am.

There were no reports of any injuries in the shooting thusfar, while the agents have cordoned off the area around the Electoral Board,where the press is barred from enteringthe building as the votes from last week’s elections are still being counted.
