Washington.- The first undocumented immigrant elected to the US Congress said he would seek comprehensive immigration reform, after he was sworn in his House of Representatives seat on Tuesday.

Adriano Espaillat (NY-Dem.), who will represent the largest community of Dominicans in the US, told reporters that the struggle for an immigrantion reform continues. "It's a personal issue, we will fight to get it eventually."

Espaillat's statement comes as president-elect Donald Trump's threat to deport the 11 million undocumented immigrants looms

"We are at this crossroads: either we continue as a benevolent and hopeful nation, or we become an aggressive and intolerant nation," Espaillat told hundreds of Dominicans waving their country's flag in the Capitol building.

Attending the ceremony was the new Senate Democratic Party leader, the also New Yorkerer Chuck Schumer, who asked immigrants to have faith.

"So I say to all those undocumented: Have faith. Have hope. Good things are going to happen and we will not let them hurt y you," Schumer said. "Being from New York I know the importance of diversity and migration. I'm not going to let Donald Trump or another Republican trample the rights of our immigrants."

Dominican story

At just nine, Espaillat arrived in New York with his family in 1963 with a tourist visa that expired, and lived in the US without documents for two years until his relatives were able to regularize their situation.

The US is not intolerant, you idiot.

If someone overstays their visa in the DR they are immediately deported.

DR law is fierce when it comes to overstaying.

It's Good to see Adriano espaillat finally persevering and becoming a congressman , after years of being beaten by that hack Charles Rangel . I wish him well , but democrats have compleately destroy New York city, with their corporate welfare and gentrification nightmare.

Yeah, over stay your tourist card, you pay multas when you go to leave, can't/don't pay -don't come back. The problem in the States is they don't leave, hahaha. Have friends, both European- at the time of their son's birth here in the DR, result - birth certificate but not citizenship in DR; son has passports from both mother and father's countries.
Illegals and non citizens are correctly not allowed to vote.
Same things as the U. S. is trying to re-establish after years of sloppy controls.

Every Dominican knows that if you get caught in P.R. For overstaying or just off tge boat . You get a free p,and ticket home . I think trump is going to do tge same . With a stop over where Dominicans can fill out the forms to get citizenship in America . He plans on doing it all this way , it will also require all participants to register and be available for check ups . But ! Get busted for drugs or robbery or running a sex ring . Your gone . And they too will get a free ticket.home . All at tax payers expense .
This too is typical .

You don't have to reinvent the wheel every day. Today you will do what you did yesterday, and tomorrow you will do what you did today. Eventually you will get somewhere.
