Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez’ legacy of poverty and governance for Danilo Medina is a climate of relative stability with 35% poverty; 14.4% unemployment and a fiscal deficit which economists see as high as RD$115.0 billion by the end of this year.

Economy minister Temistocles Montas in May said one of Medina Administration’s priorities will be to reduce Dominican Republic’ “characteristic” poverty and social inequality.

Although the official hailed a 10 point drop in poverty during Fernandez’s tenure during the last eight years, admitted it’s still too high. "I think we need to focus efforts in this direction, this implies that there has to be an outstanding economic performance to effectively reduce poverty in Dominican Republic."

To achieve this goal, the official said Medina will have to make a greater effort to create quality jobs in thriving industries such as tourism, free zones, agriculture and manufacturing.

Fernandez admits shortcomings

In his most recent speech to the National Assembly Fernandez said that 500,000 people were taken out of poverty by his economic and social policies in the last eight years.

Recently Spain said the country’s average growth of 7.2% over the past eight years makes it one of Latin America and the world’s strongest developing economies.

"Of course I have to acknowledge that Dominican Republic is a country that has to continue working to reduce poverty and social inequality, and create opportunities for all citizens," Fernandez said.

Rome wasn't created in a 12 year cycle. While there are TOO MANY poor in DR, the REAL dea involves improving economic performance and outcomes. No discernible decrease will happen with poor economic performance. The leftist here will do far worse for the DR, than those who promote economic expansion.

"Rome wasn't created in a 12 year cycle."

Yeah, but at least it was begun, which is lot more than your NARCO-PLD has done in their 12 SUPER CORRUPT 12!!

14.4% Unemployed What a joke! As if they know. Let's try 20 - 25% unemployed with a 35% underemployed, which means works like hell but gets deeper and deeper in debt with the local prestamistas and has to pawn the appliances everytime the kids get sick!

Hey Josean,

If we wouldn't has lost 25% of our GDP between 2000 and 2004 the country would it have been on a better shape, but thanks to the party that you support that is not the case. add to that the Dollar went from 16 to 1 to 55 to 1.

Please, LF is and was an empty suit.

He buried his head so far up his ass he had NO touch with reality.

Leaving a "legacy of “characteristic” poverty" is embarrassing, when all his friends made millions.

As usual the accusations without any facts being given .Just driving around in the capital and the north and the west especially , you can see the poverty and the IMF and the world bank have both stated that they are disappointed that the overall increased wealth of the DR has not benefited the poorer classes <<That can not be denied and inmy opinion it was the greatest failing of the LF administration
However how does the government reduce the plight of the poor without socialistic policies .Many dominicans are so laid back that they prefer just to live on a day to day basis ..and not move to where the work is ..it is characteristic poverty ..good phrase ... Yes , people on the very minimum wage could be given free water ,electricity and gua guas but surely this would make some Dominicans even more comfortable sitting under a tree doing nothing /.
!4 % unemployment and 70 billion to 115 billion in soveriegn debt is ok,,the hassle is money was wasted on a fat admin budget

Add to that if Lie-onel Fernandez had not been in bed COOKING THE BOOKS with BANINTER from 1996-2000 to fund FUNGLODE and PLD hadn't STOLEN 50% of the GDP in eight years or built a USELESS METRO!

Isin't this article just full of it???

ROME.- The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) ratified Dominican Republic first lady and vice president elect as its world Ambassador, in recognition of her efforts against hunger and pverty.

Margarita Cedeño was bestowed the honor in a ceremony held at FAO headquarters in Rome, in the presence of president Leonel Fernandez.

FAO director José Graziano da Silva handed the distinction to Cedeño and noted the Office of the First Lady’ numerous social development and agriculture and food projects across the country.

The First Lady and FAO Ambassador said the recognition will make her continue her efforts to better nourish Dominican families with even more enthusiasm, especially those living in poverty.

The article is certainly full of you know what. DR has never been so poor as it is now,at least the
ones that have and the have not.
The centralization of all the tax in one place without letting the rest of the Provinces spend at least
10% of it ,is a sad situation ,No diferent as from Trujillo's time, has not changed for their beneffit.
What are the local DR banks doing to bail out the gvt? I don't care what party is on control,Just
invest in small business with a marginal interest as it was done in Europe.
Another thing...What did LF and his Cabinet get out of all those official visits abroad, but to have
extensive vacation trips at DR tax payers expense ? I have not seen any bi-lateral agreements that
has help the DR people.
Had not be due to the DR abroad sending home (remesas) the local would not be under a tree
shade playing Domino and rolling dyes.

Investing capital with the only objective is to make as much money for themselves and hell with
the Dominicans ,is not a solution.Industry to employ as the costitution stipulates 80% DR & 20%
outsiders, which is not the case at the present. DR has as much as 1.5 million Haitians doing
construction work that Dominicans could do providing the pay is just, but rather fixing the problem
the Gvt looks the other way. What is the purpose of the Military if they let all those illegals in for a $?
I say reduce the military by 3 brigades Army, if they can not or will not get rid of it all together like in Costa Rica increase the Navy by two fold. Send all the Army personnel to patrol the fronteer in bet.
make them build Roads like the Romans used to do with their soldiers ,but keep them bussy &
usefull. Reduce the amount of Generals and high ranking officers in proportion to what a 5,000
men brigade calls for.

Since Tourism is the main income which i doubt very much when all those hotels in DR are foreign owened. As tax payers may be and that is where DR gvt gets its share but not enogh
so as not to have to borrowed ever again.Let us tackle the electrical sector first with build in
DR gas turbines and sell the elecricity to the private sector with the US$500 millionsjust approved by the Congress. Get rid of the SUBSIDIES which is killing the country. Do away gradually with the rented Power Plants that could be disconnected if the Gvt don't pay theW/HR that the provider is requesting at that time, which always is above the normal w/o employing local personnel since they don't pay for distribution .With a long time investment and having electricity guaratee 24/7DR could pay for any Bond floated by having every one pay for their electricity, by installing a pre-paid meter at their house hold ,above the estimated demand you know they are stealing it.

Mr. Rancier,

Did you run that statement by Little Rickey our resident EXPERTon the Day to Day Life of Dominicans before making that statement?

I am sure he would take PURPLE exception to it!

PS

Did you factor in "the benefits" of Money Laundering into your calculations as Little Rickey does?

3/4 in the Metro and 1/4 in their pockets as so call commission !

The first question in 1844 to 1936 it was US$14 millions and Trujillo left it as 0 balance. Up to

2004 it was 3 Billions, there after US$18 billions, to the present..
