Santo Domingo.- During a ceremony held at the National Palace yesterday, President Leonel Fernández awarded 18 million pesos to the Dominican gold and silver medalists at the London Olympic Games, Félix Sánchez and Luguelín Santos.

Fernández said he was very happy and satisfied with the achievements of the Dominican delegation.

He presented a RD$10 million check to Félix Sánchez who won gold in the 400 meter hurdles, a RD$6 million check to Luguelín Santos who won silver in the 400 meter sprint, one million pesos to Luguelín Santos’ trainer José Rubio, and one million pesos to the athletics federation, which was accepted by its president, Gerardo Suero Correa.

“I don’t know if it’s a question of fate… when I entered government in August 2004 Félix Sánchez gave us the gift of the country’s first ever Olympic gold medal at the Athens Olympics and now, days before handing over power, another gold medal arrives from Félix”, said Leonel Fernández. He said that Félix, with two Olympic gold medals, was an immortal athlete of the Republic.

Sports Minister Felipe Payano declared that the lives of athletes as well as trainers and sports managers had acquired increased dignity during president Leonel Fernández’s governments. He also described them as “immortal Dominicans”.

“It’s good to win a medal, but thanks to the incentives the president has given in the last two Olympic cycles, things are better and the athletes can now deal with many economic problems with these funds,” he said.

Medalists Félix Sánchez and Luguelín Santos thanked president Leonel Fernández and Felipe Payano for the economic incentives. “We are happy, now we can plan things with our families”, they said.

United States Federal Tax Code requires ALL US Citizen to report income from any source, foriegn or domestic!

PS

That includes resident aliens with legal status permanent or temporary, so becareful it was The Treasury Department that got Al Capone not the FBI!

I believe there's a threshold amount, say 50K or above for deposits that triggers the disclosure requirement. But this being in the news will no doubt perk IRS interest. Josean, appears to have found a new source of employment-The El Hippo Gambit gone Sour-and is informing on his Dominican people. What a snitch!

According to IRS rules, informants get paid 25% of the collected taxes. RD$10 million bonus in pesos at the going rate of 39.15 equals US$255,428, so taxes on that amount could be considerable, if not offset by other claimed expenses.

Most don't really understand the pressures that athletes experience, when they are in the microscope of thousands of sports spectators, in a foreign country. Add to that the stress of having won a gold medal previously, and expected to perform well, and the fact that at 35 years old, Felix was regarded as a "has been" in running circles.
The tears are just a release of pent up stress that has accumulated over time, and it is very cathartic and healthy to cry, as a release of emotional stress in that situation.

I agreed with Josean on the fact that because someone did you wrong you don't have to repay them back the same way, but you must remember that during Hipolito 4 years in office we lost 25% of our GDP and the Dollars exchange rate went up 380% if you take into account that when he took office the Dollars exchange rate was 16 to 1 and took it to 55 to 1 which cause a massive increase in prices of everything. You've got to remember that before Hipolito got into office the currency use for renting or buying a house or a car was DR pesos and that just 3 year after he took office the currency use for these things was the USD because the Dominican pesos got so devalued it that everybody wanted dollars for the rented properties. And if you understand Dominicans pricing factor which is what goes up never comes down, and that is the reason why everything is over price and the wages have only increase by maybe 80% in the past 12 year.

In a country where I see thousands of kids who don't stand a chance (regardless of ability) I think this money is better spent on development of programs that allow true Dominicans to reach for their dreams...not Americans who although of Dominican blood 3 decades ago, do nothing for this country's people or society. I as a Canadian can say I have done more for this country that Sanchez.

Ok big boy...lets see you do the right thing with that money and open a training facility...IN THIS COUNTRY".. for the future Olympians of this country. Until then...I have no respect for you as a so called "Dominican".

bernies,

The Dominican Banking Crisis originated prior to Hippo’s term, some say Lie-onel’s FUNGLODE hands are written all over it. However this really had to do more with the lack of banking regulation and lack of enforcement as well as the perennial historical common denominator in all Dominican governmental functions CORRUPTION.

So you see, would it be fair to blame Obama for the World Economic crisis that began on George Bush’s watch; or blame Bush for the crisis that is a result of Clinton signing the repeal of Glass-Steagall Act, which did away with any effective regulation; or do we blame Regan for enacting what George Bush senior called "Voodoo Economics"; which brought back to life Supply Side Economics that gave us the Great Depression in the 1930’s and now the Great Recession of the beginning of the 21st century?

This issue is “WHAT DID YOU KNOW AND WHEN DID YOU KNOW IT” as they say.

Many of us contend that Lie-onel new or should have known of the Shenanigans that were going on in Baninter, but did nothing for whatever motive or reason. When it blew up in Hippos face, he acted correctly as history has shown and averted a full meltdown of the Dominican bank system and that's the difference.

PS

In fairness to Hippo the US vetted the Dominican Bank Crisis and Hippo did better in their assessment of the managing the crisis than Lie-onel’s rhetoric that you are repeating here today, to lay it All on the lap of Hippo!

In fact Hippo wrote and published an open letter to Lie-onel on the matter that he has yet to respond to.

You know why, because HE CAN’T!

Yes, certainly our little Kiwi brother did very well - we root for them when we are not rooting for Australia. The Australian tally was okay but not as good as in previous years. Certainly more populous, wealthy countries generally do better, but there are some very outstanding exceptions. When the differences are mili-seconds, anything can happen.

The Dominican Republic does not look "bad" - it is your best performance ever and a credit to these 2 super athletes. Leo is not fat by general standards, but against these guys he looks very pudgy. Yet he looks quite trim when standing beside the new Deputy President.
