MADRID.- The Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization praised Dominican Republic’s regional leadership in the in the hospitality industry, calling the Caribbean country’s push develop the activity a model for the world.

Taleb Rifai, in an activity to honor president Leonel Fernandez in the organization’s headquarters, affirmed that despite the financial crisis which affected tourism globally, Dominican Republic continued to receive the same number of visitors.

He said the organization is ready to support the country by training Dominican students to earn masters degrees in tourism.

Rifai hailed what he called Fernandez’s sensitivity and dominance of tourism issues. “Mr. President, while you play an important role in your country’s tourism leadership in the Caribbean, there are chief executives who don’t show as much sensitivity with the topic.”

“You’re an ambassador of the tourism industry in the region. I take this opportunity to congratulate you for the prominent role which the Dominican Republic plays in global tourism, making your country the Caribbean’s top destination. The country’s progress in that area is thanks to the work and collaboration of your Tourism Minister and his outstanding team.”

Dread,

Is this real or is the DR twisting the arms of this organization?

You may hate him, but he's doing far more for the DR than all previous presidents. No saint, but if you're into saints don't look at politics: there are none.

JimHarrington,

Eso se sabe and it has been that way for how many years now? It is slowly but surely being addressed y yo dudo que los turistas dejen de venir a este Paraiso!

You're always harping at any bit of bad news out of DR, perhaps you might, once in a while, take a break and see the boarder picture. Things aren't perfect by a long shot, but to be so negative is not taking into account the positive movement taking place in DR. Balance your assessment, all is not terrible in the land of Quisqueya.

president Leonel Fernandez

the peace-maker.
all well and good for this president

but u cant be a diplomatic midget in your OWN NEIGHBORHOOD and try and be a GIANT ABOARD.
IF THE DR. WANTS TO BE A CONSTRUCTIVE PLAYER IN WORLD AFFAIRS, AND THE PLACE FOR TOURISTS TO BE HE CAN START BY BEHAVING LIKE ONE AT HOME IN THE DR..

The organization is ready to support the country. Support the DR by training students to earn masters degrees in tourism. If tourism is an important part of the economic pie in DR, why on earth not take advantages of offers like this? One very real and problematic issue with DR tourism is the lack of trained personnel. Especially English speaking Dominicans in all facets of the economic sectors. Why pass on this opportunity to help broaden the talent skill set of the people? Cuba would never pass on this invitation willmo.

Fijate que exageracion esas de que "calling the Caribbean country’s push develop the activity a model for the world" , Really?
