Santo Domingo. - 63 security cameras will be installed in different parts of the Colonial Zone to observe that part of the city, aimed at halting the holdups and vandalism and bolster the safety of the citizen.

Interior and Police minister Jose Ramon Fadul made the announcement in a press conference, during which Police Chief Jose Polanco, and Ciudad Ovando Foundation president Luis Broker signed an agreement to install the cameras, at a cost of US$20,000, a sum he said includes contributions by Zone retailers.

Fadul said the project will progressive and expanded to other zones, adding that the Police will be in charge of monitoring cameras’ images observed in strategic points.

More security cameras need to be installed throughout the republic. While this will likely drive crime away from the public areas, it'll enhance the public peace for nationals and foreigners alike. Perhaps even drive criminal activity down overall. Hope this happens in many parts of the nation-and sooner better than later. The technology is proven and relatively cheap these days.

Security cameras in the Colonial should help to increase property values and provide retailers with more customers in time. JG has the pulse on the CZ .... keep us advised buddy!

My uncle and his family live in the second floor of an old colonial villa in La Zona. The place has a balcony and beautiful old tiles from back in the day. You walk around the place and you can just FEEL the history. They have lived their for more than 40 years!!!!
40 YEARS!!!!!!!!
Now that the yuppies are coming in they have to get OUT.
They are renters and even thought they might have had the option to buy back in the day. They never took unless I am misinformed.
They are two minutes away from the statue of the monk. What's his name again? I'm so embarrassed to admit I forgot it.

Oh well, I could see the changes coming and I did give them a warning two years ago. That is what will keep happening Dominicano's you treat the country like poop and the foreigners will swoop in and take it from you.
I forsee that the waterfront afrea of the Ozama will be claimed by wealthy foreigners in the future.
It's just to beautiful to be allowed to remain the way it is.

I saw a documentary of it on Youtube and it was breathtaking. Dominican's wake up, pretty soon you will be the new Taino's and people will be reading about you in the history books.
Papi y como eran los Dominicano's?

My first comment is in relation to the banning ,,the postings of both contributors were becoming very annoying.
Secondly , as I live in ZC and have been robbed two times and mugged another time I really think these cameras are a total waste of money .There are a very large number of police in ZC from Ave mexico down to el Malecon and although they do nothing , there are very few problems except for the snatch and grab that has now become a problem .BUT, during the night when people feel insecure in the streets and there are muggings and robberies, there is not ONE policeman in sight ,The two or three policemen on duty in the office in Conde-Jose Reyes hardly move and I see no patrol vans.I would prefer some police patrols at night rather than cameras that will soon become non functional .

ricardo. as far as patroling i certanly agree with you. 90 % of policeing is simply a PRESENCE! i have only ever had one person try to rob me and that was in a place called mama tingo in a northern part of the city. (note i did say try) i have been all over the zona colonial . i am quite warry and try not to develop patterns as i move around, and have never had any problems there. im not implying they dont excist. just that i have not had the misfortune to experience it there. and i hope it stays that way.

Curios ,,yes, you are correct about trying not to develop a pattern but this is difficult because most residents put their cars in the public garages at night and must walk from the garage to their home .We have to putthe cars in the public parking station at night because there are vandals and thieves who take the mirrors and radios etc from the cars .

we could all thank leonel and his band of 40 thieves , he sold all the land to private investors, and all the beaches now belong to some fat white guy from florida or kansas lol . If you own property or land in the dominican republic , sell your land and take them bastards for every penny there worth. !

pepper spray them. If more people carried pepper spray in DR, some might think twice before going for the purses

Great idea, but If the Dominican Police is going to do the Monitoring of the Cameras, I just hope they don't do a half ass job. Just like they are suppose to be on top of other important jobs, they eventually screw up.
