BARAHONA, Dominican Republic. – As many as 30 public and private entities have forged an ambitious alliance headed by the Tourism Ministry and the Barahona Tourism Cluster, to promote and ensure sustainability for the Century Airline’s new route initially with three weekly flights, which link the promising Southwest with Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

Barahona Tourism Cluster vice president Polibio Schiffino said the agreement with companies, government agencies and provincial authorities ensures Air Century’s smooth flight operations during the first six months, while working on the strategy to develop, market and showcase the fledgling destination.

Schiffino said during six months the supporters will buy a determined number of seats so the airline can guarantee a regular frequency for the weekly flights.

Among the entities that form part of the grand alliance figure DonRepTours,  Eco Tours Barahona, Casa Bonita Boutique Hotel, Rancho Platón, Consorcio Azucarero Central, Ege Haina, Pasteurizadora Rica, Hotel Playa Azul, Barahona City Council, Pedro Auto Import and the Barahona Texaco station.

Also Rancho Don Cesar, Montesacro Casa Maya, the towns halls at Villa Central and Palo Alto, Hotel Magnolia, Hotel El Quemaito, Telecable Tricom, Rodrilca SRL, Restaurant Brisas del Caribe, Natclinic, Barahona Governor’s Office, the Customs Agency and the Méndez pharmacy.

Let's hope these entities do right and provide the correct infrastructure needed for such lofty plans. How waste-water will be treated and handled should be high on the list of conditions. But the area is beautiful and could support a sustainable tourist business plan. Plan it for mainly High End travelers; DR has enough low end traffic.

I give the two year to transparently ruin this "alliance" with their corruption.

Dominicans can not suppress their inbred entitlement to take and leave NOTHING in return.

The tourists do not travel in the DR because transportation is too expensive. I went to Punta Cana last February and I wanted to get out of the hotel to go the city of Bavaro. one way trip was $40 so, $80 just in transportation. No way, I just stayed in the hotel.

Instead of having joint tourism destination with Puerto Rico and Haiti, we should have joint tourism destinations between Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Samaná, Santo Domingo, and other destinations within the DR that need help. But instead we're having joint tourism destinations with our competitors...
