New York, NY.- The cinnamon skin beauty Chantel Martinez, representing La Altagracia province, won the Miss Dominican Republic U.S. 2012 crown last weekend, in New York City’s Symphony Space Theater.

A distinguished panel of judges, including members of the Miss Dominican Republic Universe organization, Telemundo 47, Delta Air Lines and other celebrities chose the eastern province candidate over her competitors, who represented the regions from where their parents hail.

Martinez will now represent the Dominican community in the U.S. as a participating province in the Miss Universe Dominican Republic 2013 pageant slated for later this year in Santo Domingo.

The 18 year-old beauty lives with her parents of Dominican origin in New York, where she studies criminal law at John Jay College.

Aside from her exotic beauty, Martinez’s eloquent response in English and Spanish to the final question posed by former Miss Dominican Republic Universe Eva Arias propelled her to the lead.

The judges included Jon Wunderlich, of DREAM Project; Miss Dominican Republic Universe Commercial Director Magdalena Ureña; Telemundo 47 anchor Jorge Ramos; Women Chamber of Commerce President Quenia Abreu; prominent plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Yager; Delta Air Lines Regional manager María Fernanda Price; professional and Miss Universe Organization official photographer Fadil Berisha; international model Rosa Gough; Miss New York USA 2012 Johanna Sambucini,, and Telemundo 47 President Carlos Sánchez.

Why does nobody who actually lives here...win these things? Must be the month for Americans posing as Dominicans.

"puntacana" mike..the only poser here is you sir. You see, it's possible that tourism will tank..then you and your ilk will leave our island for what to you may be greener pastures but regardless, we Dominicans born abroad will always have ties to our land of origin that go deeper than fun in the sun.

Cibi....I happy that you are able to pre-qualify me as one who simply goes where the money is. It only shows your true ignorance and tolerance of others who are not of Dominican blood. You might do yourself a favour and unless you really know me, refrain from making such references. I think you might be surprised just how Dominican I have become and the sacrifices I have made to become so...none of which are financially motivated. BTW...I have always said action is stronger than words....please tell us how you have contributed to the country as a whole (not just family)?

Thanks Devine...I understand now. I read it as the Ms Universe contest...not Ms Dominican Universe...quite a difference in the two. My apologies.

Puntacanamike, I don't need give you any personal information so as to prove my Dominicanness to you for you are not the final arbitrator on who is Dominican. That is decided by providence. It is mine by blood and it is mine forever. You have alot of nerve disparaging Dominicans who were born abroad, a group who has long sustained the nation before your like came along through our remittances and investments in the communities we stem from. And as for ignorance..this from a man who just berated a Dominican-American..for winning a contest for Dominican-Americans. Can't make this stuff up.

Yeah, keep teaching young women that the sum total of their identity is a hot body. Worldwide how culture is regressing when it comes to equality. Do any of you wonder why it is such a short step from schoolgirl to prostitution?

One things for sure, she is Dominican, as she is already padding her resume, unless she is a genius too.

" The 18 year-old beauty lives with her parents of Dominican origin in New York, where she studies criminal law at John Jay College".

I have never heard of any college or university for that matter that teaches solely "criminal law",law" as major in an undergraduate program. Maybe Criminal Justice, which is what many law enforcement or Pre-Law students major in. The study of law in the US, unlike in the DR, requires acceptance in an accredited law school after completion of an undergraduate degree and a placement test. Perhaps if the DR had similar requirements there would not be as many "criminals" practicing law in the DR.

Or perhaps it is just an error in the story made by another graduate from a Journalism program in a DR "University".

Nonetheless congrats! Just tired of reading poorly written stories with incorrect facts and incorrectly bolstered credentials. Enac

I believe it is a mistranslation, for the name of the school is John Jay College of Criminal Justice. A friend of mine got her degree in Criminal Justice from said college

No DT simply has bad translators. Many of the stories we read were originally written in Spanish and later translated into English, but the end product many times leaves much to be desired.
