Santo Domingo.- The missing link for fast travel between Dominican Republic’s capital and its vast resort region to the east will be inaugurated Wednesday and open to motorists Thursday, the Public Works Ministry announced Tuesday.

President Leonel Fernandez will head the ribbon cutting for the Coral Highway, funded through the Central American Economic Integration Bank (CABEI) and the BNP-Paribas/PRI of Brazil.

The 70 kilometers-long four lane highway will link the Punta Cana resort region in the east with the city of La Romana, where it joins the Eastern Motorway to San Pedro and Santo Domingo to the west.

Public Works minister Victor Diaz said the road is designed for a speed if 110 KPH, with 24 minutes drive time, and 8,000 vehicles per day traffic flow.

This opening is nothing short of nonsence,,,the road around la Romana simply is not there nor is the road near Cumayasa ,,it is simply ribbon cutting of a good project that is far from completed ,,,there is still much to be done //I am unsure of the situation at the other side of otra banda

Long overdue. However, the government has to improve the gaps (links) and expand them to four lanes at the roadways at eastern end of La Romana and the La Romana link to San Pedro to make the traveling more fluid.

"missing link"?...Was it ever lost, and now you've found it?

Try not to translate English into Spanish, or vice-versa, literally. It won't make much sense.
You could have reported it as: "unfinished gap", or "stretch of the road"...eh?

Anyway, This have better be true. I'll be checking it out, personally, later this summer!

Ron Evans ,,,there is absolutely no chance that the entire road will be finished by then ..you may have a pleasant drive for some of the way between Punta Cana and la Romana , then there will be an almighty jam in la Romana to Cumayasa ,,,ok to just before San Pedro and then back to single lane traffic ...NO work has been commenced to double that dangerous detour of San Pedro .
What is more , in reverse from San Pedro to la Romana you wil be travelling ona road full of deep potholesand 70 will be a good average speed.

Ricardolito,
Has the bypass around La Romana been drafted? Has there been funding and work started?
Last I saw in April, nothing was begun.
I can not believe this will ever be completed.
How much of the road from LaRomana east is finished?

I actually went for a drive to see where the road around la Romana was ,,it has to cross a river and the road that goes past the la Romana cemetary and past Costa Nurseries ...there is NOTHING to be seen ,,,,yet two years ago I am sure I saw where the two lanes had been cleared and further west ,,it was where the drug planes were landing on the dirt road that was planned to be part of the bypass
To the east of la Romana, the road looks as if starts at the end of Casa de Campo ,,there used to be a road to Altos de Chavon and then crosses Rio Chavon ..more south than the existing road and looks fairly well finished to you get to around Otra Banda which is just past Higuey ,,,I could not see any entrance to the new super Coral Highway at the eastern end ,,

Another good example of what can happen when medications aren't taken on time and in the proper dosage!
