US State Department releases new Int’l Narcotics Control Strategy Report

Santo Domingo.- The majority of cocaine that enters the United States first moves through Central America, the US State Department revealed in its newest annual drug report.

According to the 2016 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR), the Dominican Republic stood out as the most important drug transit country, among Caribbean nations, with approximately six percent of illicit South American drugs destined for North America and Europe passing through the country, primarily entering via maritime routes.

The two-volume report offers a comprehensive assessment of the efforts of foreign governments to reduce illicit narcotics production, trafficking and use, in keeping with their international obligations under UN treaties, while also presenting information on governments’ efforts to counter money laundering and terrorist financing.

This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the INCSR. It’s also notable that in 2016, the United Nations General Assembly will convene the international drug control community in April for a Special Session on drugs, the first in almost twenty years.
