Santo Domingo.- The Airports Dept. on Mon. started the reconditioning of the Santo Domingo Heliport to make it the most modern in the Caribbean and Central America, in compliance with international and environmental standards at the site where it has operated for 10 years.
The project to cost RD$37.6 million aims to satisfy the demand of dozens of helicopter operators that use the facility located just six kilometers from downtown Santo Domingo.
In a statement, Airports the site will be expanded to three helipads of 18 meters in diameter and another of over 25 meters for large helicopters. It will also have a fuel station.
It said each pad will have capacity for night operations with a modern aeronautical lighting system activated by radiofrequency when helicopters land or take off.
“The reason for enabling this heliport is that the city continues to grow, there are new needs and we have the 911 service for emergencies, we also have the Aero ambulance system to make a quick transfer, so with that adaptation we are complying with all the regulation.”
