Washington.- Dominican Republic on Tues. voted against Venezuela’s latest election, in the 48th regular session of the OAS General Assembly.

The resolution was approved by19 countries, in which the Dominican Republic was the first to vote.

Dominican Foreign minister Miguel Vargas made the announcement in a tweet, in which he asked the hemispheric body “to seek a peaceful, democratic and definitive solution to the situation in the South American country, where the tension between the political and economic actors makes us fear that at any moment a breach of governance may occur.”

He said several factors came together to abort the four rounds of talks between Venezuela’s feuding sides that took place in Santo Domingo.

“It was impossible to overcome the lack of a real will to reach agreements between the parties in conflict, both the Government and the opposition. And this was what ultimately prevented this initiative from being effective,” said the Foreign Minister.

He thanked the parties and countries for their confidence in the dialogue in the Dominican Republic and president Danilo Medina, who mediated “in a balanced manner.”

He said the participants in the talks tried by all means to stage Venezuela’s election with all safeguards. “We knew that, without the real and effective restoration of the political rights of all the parties and possible candidates, a final and definitive agreement wasn’t viable.”
