Barahona, Dominican Republic.- President Danilo Medina on Sun. inspected the work on the dam at Monte Grande, being built in Barahona province (southwest), including the excavation, the detour tunnel and entry channel.
The dam is expected to have a positive economic impact on the entire region, after over 20 years of demand by inhabitants.
Monte Grande will create 2,500 direct jobs and benefit 12,500 area workers and farmers, once the irrigation of over 44,00 hectares of land begins.
The dam is being built at a cost of US$249.8 million, as the result of a loan approved by the Congress last week.
Medina also made a surprise visit to seven agro-forestry projects that seek to recover Barahona’s watersheds, as well as to protect the environment through reforestation.
