Santo Domingo.- Environment minister, Ángel Estévez, on Mon. said all supermarket chains are being called to start eliminating the use of plastics, after tons of trash blanketed on the capital’s coast over the weekend, dragged by a storm’s rains.
“We are calling on all supermarket chains to begin eliminating the use of plastics. We are polluting the new generations and this must change,” Estévez tweeted.
Last week, the official warned the business sector to reduce the use of plastics. “We must reduce the use of plastics in the Dominican Republic. This message I am telling the entrepreneurs, prepare yourself because one day you will stop using plastics in the Dominican Republic.”
During a visit to the beach near the Colonial Zone, Estévez also announced that Environment works to “create a regime of consequences for people who throw trash in the street.”
“Caring for the environment is a matter not only for the president, the mayors or the ministry; it’s a problem for all citizens. If we all contribute the work is better,” he said.
