Manzanillo, Dominican Republic.- Ruling party (PLD) presidential hopeful Francisco Dominguez on Fri. said that to create jobs and strengthen economic development, the Northwest needs to transform the port at Manzanillo into a “mega-port.”

He said the port should also be adapted to receive cruise ships.

“Among my priorities for this province is to stop the high rate of unemployment, with the creation of quality jobs, where we can involve young people in the productive sector, where people can have a dignified salary, reflected in their way of life and relate,” said Dominguez during a campaign tour of Montecristi province towns.

The former Environment Minister, who seeks the Presidency in the 2020 election, stressed that another work that would contribute to raising the area’s standard of living would be the construction of a major natural gas-fired power plant.

“I dream of Manzanillo port being a mega port for the area, that it works as a sustainable development hub, which has a shipyard, whose single shipyard can generate hundreds of jobs, that the same port is a staging area to receive cruises, as well as the possibility of a large fuel tank,” Dominguez said quoted by Diario Libre.
