Santo Domingo.-  Dominican ruling party (PLD) leader Manolo Pichardo on Wed. said his political organization needs to be “de-wormed” because “it’s been contaminated with the worms of opportunism” that came to the Government to thrive and enrich themselves.

“In the PLD there are a few who moved away from Juan Bosch and the principles of the organization, damaging its image, but those of us who wager on cleansing our party are more,” he said.

Pichardo, president of the Latin American and Caribbean Political Parties Conference (Copppal), believes that the country is undergoing a “great moral breakdown in which common criminals, police officers, judges and politicians participate” which he affirms degrades social life.

“It’s a matter of the one in the neighborhood seeing the policeman patrolling charging tolls for extortion; the policeman sees his bosses do the same, the bosses see the politicians enrich themselves with txpayer money and we all observe the people in charge of serving justice selling sentences; it’s pus spurting all over the social fabric.”
