Barahona, Dominican Republic-. Dams and canals agency (INDRHI) director Olgo Fernández on Sun. said construction on the Monte Grande dam is 35% complete.

He said the project, which will have a major socio-economic impact in the south region, is being built without the Ecuadorian Regional Bank having made the first disbursement of the US$249.0 million loan to finish the hydroelectric complex.

He said the dam will be completed as schedule, to ensure water to the aqueducts of many communities in several southwestern provinces.

During a tour with journalists from different media, the official said the dam will irrigate over 43,000 hectares of rice, bananas and other crops, in addition to producing electricity.
