Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s free zones sector was posted exports worth US$6.3 billion during 2018, a 9.8 percent jump compared with 2017, according to Central Bank figures on the economy’s performance.
In the “Export promotion year” the Central Bank’s January-September 2018 Report, the free zones sector posted the highest growth rate of the year-on-year GDP, with 12.0 percent, paced by electrical products (36.9 percent), jewelry items (21.2 percent) and medical and pharmaceutical products.
In another report the Industry and Commerce Ministry affirms that free zones were one of the sectors which created the most direct jobs in the economy, posting 170,000.
National Free Zones Council director, Luisa Fernández announced that 2018 ended with 73 free zone parks in operation.
