Medina lies about Dominican deportees: US lawmaker Espaillat

A. Espaillat. File

New York.- The Dominican lawmaker in the US House of Representatives on Sun. labeled as inappropriate and false president Danilo Medina’s allegation that Dominicans deported from the US are to blame for the recent spike in crimes in the country.

Adriano Espaillat said his country reaps more pros than cons from the Dominicans in the US. “That is false, I consider it a somewhat inappropriate statement. We are a community that sends billions in remittances (…). The Dominican Republic benefits greatly from our presence abroad, very particularly, here in the United States.”

He added that Dominicans who reside in the US who recently visited their country spend like tourists because they go to resorts with their entire family, which hasn’t had the opportunity to go to those places. “As tourists we go to the resorts, where we invite our families, many of whom had never visited any type of resort there to share Dominican tourism with us.”

Espaillat added that Dominicans abroad are vital to the economy. “I would say that if that disappears, the Dominican economy sinks, then there is no reason to highlight what could be so small, that there are countless people who had legal problems here and return to their native country.”
