Govt. seeks US$60M to build new Northwest port

Santiago.- Presidency chief of staff, Gustavo Montalvo, on Thurs. said the Govt. seeks international financing of around US$60 million to build a new port in Manzanillo (northwest).

He said the new port’s dimensions respond to expectations on maritime trade.

He said they work on the Master Plan for the various economic, logistic and port activities for the site adjacent to Bahia Manzanillo.

Montalvo said the port project responds to a request from the business community of Santiago and the North region.

He also cited a study on the Northwest’s productive development capacity, which he affirms revealed the potential of the agro and tourism industries.

The official stressed that in addition to a port, Manzanillo can house a shipyard to serve a large number of vessels that ply the northern seaway, as well as the cruise ships, which can be developed from the region’s numerous natural attractions.

Montalvo spoke during a luncheon hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Santiago, at UTESA University’s Culture and Convention Center.
