Santo Domingo.- The Council that groups most of Dominican Republic’s evangelical churches on Wed. said it opposes a new a Constitutional amendment that paves the way for president Danilo Medina’s reelection.
With its position the Dominican Evangelical Unity Council (Codue) joins the Catholic Church, which during scathing critique in Easter Friday sermons slammed “officials close to president Danilo Medina’s desire to perpetuate themselves in power.”
The Codue statements also coincide with Santo Domingo archbishop Francisco Ozoria, that the country could “fall into a dictatorship.”
It said the Constitution shouldn’t be amended to obtain long-term political benefits in favor of a single person. “We cannot give the wrong message by trying to amend our Constitution every time we want to change something that does not please those who have power in their hands.”
