Haitians lead in Dominican Republic residencies issued in 2019

Santo Domingo.- The residency permits issued by the Immigration Directorate (DGM) tripled in the first quarter compared to the same period last year.

2,195 residencies were issued from January to March 2018:  Venezuelans (381), Americans (275), Spaniards (165), Haitians (126) and Italians (108).

The percentage skyrocketed 363% in 2019 with 7,971 residencies, headed by Haitians (1,609), Venezuelans (1,168), Americans (890), Spaniards (494) and Italians (415), according to statistics from Immigration.

Outlet El Dia reports that the reasons given by immigrants to decide on the Dominican Republic are even poetic. From a taste for the cuisine, the sun, the politics, legal and economic stability in the last decades or simply: the people. “All agree that the Dominican is affable, cheerful and selfless.”
