Washington derails Dominican leader’s reelection train

Santo Domingo.- The submission of a bill to amend the Constitution is now in doubt after a US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, was disclosed Thurs warned president Danilo Medina to “preserve democratic institutions and respect the rule of law and the Constitution, particularly in the period leading up to the 2020 elections in the Dominican Republic.”

The following statement is attributed to State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus:

Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke yesterday with the President of the Dominican Republic Danilo Medina. Both discussed the importance of all political actors in the Dominican Republic preserving democratic institutions and respect the rule of law and the Constitution, particularly in the run up to the elections of 2020.
