Economist: period of economic boom is coming to an end

Santo Domingo, RD

The political landscape that is occurring in the Dominican Republic is directly affecting the economy of the country, affecting the growth of the foreign trade and investment sectors, according to economist Pavel Isa Contreras.

During the presentation of the fifth Foreign Trade Panorama, held at the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (Intec), Isa Contreras said that the economic boom period is coming to an end, due to the low growth of several sectors of national production. The economist said that the slowdown in economic growth observed in recent months, and the loss of dynamism of the international economy, negatively impact Dominican foreign trade, both in exports and imports.

Contreras said that the most recent data published by Customs indicate that between January and August 2019, total exports grew by only US $ 261 million compared to the total achieved between January and August 2018, for a growth of 4.1%.
