SANTO DOMINGO.- Members of the Dominican Republic Navy discovered four boats of clandestine manufacture with capacity for more than 150 passengers, as well as equipment that would be used for illicit trafficking of people to the neighboring island of Puerto Rico, the institution reported today.

The findings were produced in different operations carried out by land, in compliance with the execution and prevention plan ordered by the General Command of the institution with the objective of alleviating illegal migration and other threats to maritime safety throughout the Dominican coast, said a press statement.

Two of the illegal trips that were going to be made in these vessels, which exceed 25 feet, were sponsored by Saturnino Reyes Campos, alias Type Bien, who is actively sought by members belonging to the Directorate of Naval Intelligence (M-2).

In addition to the findings made in the provinces and municipalities of Azua, Sabana de la Mar, Playa los Cocos, and Miches simultaneously, the authorities arrested eight people for investigative purposes, notes the note.

The Navy announced that it will continue and increase its preventive enforcement throughout the national territory, given that, according to statistical data from previous years, with the approach of the Christmas season there is an increase in these illegal trips.
