Santo Domingo.- At least 44,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS in the Dominican Republic, 65% of which are women, but only 20,791 have access to antiretroviral (drugs to prevent or destroy the replication of retroviruses), 33,969 are provided follow-up, with 1,581 infants.
To improve their quality of life, the government allocated RD$134 million for the program for HIV patients. Of the total, RD$79 million will be to buy ARVs and RD$55 million for testing, and procurement of drugs for collateral infections.
The announcement was made by Council HIV/AIDS (Conavihsida) director Victor Terrero, and Public Health minister Freddy Hidalgo, during a ceremony to mark World Day to Combat HIV / AIDS, held in the National Palace.
