Amnesty International warns the authorities on Police abuse

Santo Domingo. – Amnesty International (AI) yesterday warned the Dominican authorities to put a halt to the Police’s alleged abuses against citizens, practice it calls shameful.

AI’s demand comes on the eve of the UN’s International Convention Against Torture taking effect Thursday, which bans the mistreatment of people in police custody.

Amnesty International special adviser Javier Zúñiga said however that, “it’s necessary praise the Dominican Republic for having formed part incorporated of this important treaty.”

“The country’s authorities, and in particular the National Police, must once and for all put an end to abusive practices which exist for decades, and to get to work to comply with the Treaty’s provision,” Zúñiga said.
