Activities mark Founding Father’s birth date

Santo Domingo.- Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, born in Santo Domingo on March 9, 1817, joined the plot hatched by Juan Pablo Duarte and other patriots against the Haitian occupation in 1838.

To evade the pursuit by the Haitian military sent to arrest him in 1843, Sanchez spread the rumor that he had died, and continued the independence movement until culminating in the start of the confrontation with the occupation force on February 27, 1844, and their surrender one day later.

He was executed on orders from then president Pedro Santana in San Juan de la Maguana July 4, 1861, for trying to halt the plans to return the country to Spanish dominance.

Several activities to mark his birth date are slated for today Friday nationwide
